About Our Program

The Program was
founded by Dr. Teri Quatman, Ph.D., (Stanford University), and Susan Martin,
M.S., M.A., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, with degrees in Nutrition
Science and Exercise Physiology (UC Davis; University of Washington). Cognizant
of the ineffectiveness of diet programs for many, these psychotherapists have
created a recovery treatment program to help people who slowly, over time, have
become enslaved by and obsessed with food, and find themselves chronically
grazing, binging and overeating. For most, this has led to being overweight
and/or obese. The vision of the program is to help participants achieve the kind
of permanent metabolic and psychological change that will lead to the ultimate
resolution of their disordered relationship with food. In order to do this,
participants are helped to encounter the underlying factors (both physiologic
and psychological) that initially created and currently maintain their
problematic eating. The program was born of the founders' personal experiences,
and is fueled by the deeply held conviction that our culture has failed to offer
appropriate professional services for people who are overweight and/or suffer
from compulsive overeating and years of chronic dieting.
The program provides
group-based and individually-focused care. All clients participate in the
12-week nutritional workshop. All clients are given an individual case manager.
When long-term work is appropriate, ongoing process groups, staffed by licensed
psychotherapists, are provided. Program psychologists and Marriage and Family
Therapists are also available for individual treatment. The program is available
to adults and adolescents. We are also committed to obesity prevention, and
anticipate providing classes and workshops to youth in the schools, as well as
other programs targeting at-risk adults in the community in order to educate
people about this growing problem.
